Automatic futility

I have a turbo '88 5000CS with automatic transmission.  I recall that
some consumer guidebook stated that the automatic pretty much negates
any advantage of having the turbocharger.  Would any modifications for
performance (say, a new PROM for the computer, alterations to the exhaust
system) be worth the trouble and expense, or would the automatic make
them futile?
