oil change

I drive an 87 Audi 4000S and my next oil change is pretty
close.
After extensive discussions of synthetic oil on the net,
I tried to raise the issue locally (Champaign, IL, USA).

I got a reasonable response that with 53K miles on my car
it is pretty much late to expect wonders from the synthe oil,
and that it doesn't look like an appropriate investment right
now and that at least I am not the most likely candidate to
benefit from it, etc...

What do people think out there anyway ?

Another silly question: if I go for regular oil, what brand
would be the best (in terms of paraffines and stuff) ?
