overheated brakes?

I went for an unusually aggressive drive in my 5000 CS turbo -- lots of
braking on steep (8% grade and worse) mountain roads.  A red triangle
labeled "brakes" appeared on the instrument panel and a chime sounded.
I pulled over, waited 15 minutes, and used low gear on the automatic
all the way into town.  When I stopped the car after the warning, the
air was full of the sweet smell of overheated brake.  Have I caused any
permanent damage?  The brakes seem to work as well as ever.
