I have an 86 5000T-Q that had this exact problem once. It was still under
warranty at the time, so I had the dealer fix it.  They replaced the idle
stabilizer valve and the problem went away.  It happened randomly, and was a
bit scary.

It is possible to fix the valve you have. It's located at the back end of the
valve cover. It's about 4" long and 1" in diameter and has a hose and a wiring
connector on it.  Take it out (easy), and take it apart. Spray the thing with
WD-40 until it is super clean. Be careful not to twang the spring in there.

These valves default to slow idle if they are electrically dead, so fast idle
indicates mechanical stickiness. I've cleaned mine this way and it smoothed out
idle dramatically.  It's good thing to do on any 5000T.
