Thanks.  This is the info I was hoping for!  I didn't know it was possible to
clean/repair the programmer -- I'm glad I do know now.  My system started
acting ok in the last couple of days -- it must be dirt in those vacuum
solenoids you mentioned.  Your message is now stored on my local disk for
reference if/when it craps out again.

BTW -- the programmer isn't that hard to get to.  I replaced the heater core
six months ago and found that removing the dash panels was the easy part!
Cleaning and reassmbling the programmer sounds like a delicate job, but a 
real cost savings over replacement.
