I have a 84 with 162k, and I just reciently took my cardboard pieces off as
well (they had deteriorated badly). Before the removal, my temp ran about
2/3 to 3/4 of scale (I thought it was a bit to high :-| ). After I removed
the cardboard, the temp dropped to 1/3 to 1/2. I don't know if it is
really running cooler or the sensor is be fooled by more turbulance or
what. Anyway, I don't plan to replace the cardboard anyway. ---JCG.
