My guess is that the cardboard pieces make a plenum chamber to move
air when the fan comes on. Removing them may give you more airflow
going down the road whichwould explain the temp drop on your car.
but the test will be on a warm day sitting in traffic.(unless there
is no traffic where youlive)
Without the cardboard, the fan may not be able to move air through the
radiater as well. Like, when you have a hole in a vaccum cleaner hose,
you lose suction.
On our 84 4000Q, I fixed it with duct tape. Hey you can laugh
but it was over a year ago and its still together. Cost was right. :)
