Fuel Pump Problems
My 1988 Audi 100 2.2E has now ground to a halt on two rather embarrassing occasions. The symptom was accute loss of power at speed with the car gradually slowing down with the engine surging until it eventually stopped. A strange whizzing noise was also coming from the fuel pump. The car would easily restart and continue for another few minutes until it did the same all over again.
The Audi dealer (in France) replaced the pump and fuel filter. I also asked for the tank to be checked for sludge which I was told had been done.
This happened again a second time (500 miles later) with exactly the same symptoms. Another dealer (UK) had a look in the tank an pulled out the fuel pump and blew it out with an air line. They also found sludge in the bottom of the tank and so put some additive into the fuel to dissolve the sludge.
I don't really have much faith in these additives and the garage advised me that it was a really difficult job to drain the tank. Is this a common problem with this car?
