I had a problem with the idle sensor (?) on my '87 Coupe a while back.  I had
a "sinusoidal" idle (up to 1500+ rpm, down to 600 where it almost stalled, then
repeat).  One consequence appeared to be very lean mixture in the "troughs" 
'cuz I got 30+ mpg on the trip computer.  Obviously, there was a bit of knock
during acceleration.  Multiple dealer service [under Audi Advantage  :-) ] 
eventually solved it and brought my mpg down to 24 in mixed driving.
