My mechanic buddy tells me that Audi/VW gasoline engines are
non-interference (he and his compatriots use the term "freewheeling"). He
says he has replaced many broken Audi/VW cam belts and sent the customer
on his merry way.
He notes that the Audi/VW diesel engines have serious interference and that a
broken belt on such a diesel engine will cause major damage. He owned a
diesel VW pickup himself, and made sure the belt was good.
disclaimer: I don't work for Audi/VW. Don't sue me if your engine goes bang.
