They feel like maintenance items. It could be the roads. I recently saw a
comparison of roads in New England and it claimed that New Hampshire has the
worst roads and gave some average dollar amount per car that we pay for the bad
roads. I was also driving on some bad rims for quite a while so this may have
accelerated their wear.

They (the rears) are definitely worn. Note that the problem has been with the
rear bushings and this is a Quattro.

You seem to imply that the control arm bushings are regular wear items that
need to be replaced every 36K or so. I thought suspension bushings generally
should be replaced only if they are worn and the frequency depends on the
type of roads that you drive the car on. On my car, I have 127K miles on
the original bushings.
