Yes, this happen to my 87 GTI cat. It just sounded like somebody was
rattling a cone in it. I took it off and emptied the bits out (etc) and put
it back on (no smog checking here, the dealer wanted $750!!!!). How ever,
in your case I would check with the dealer. I think there is a law (I know
there is in Canada) that all smog equipment on any car must be functional (
and therefore warrenteed) for five years. I friend of mine had the cat
replaced on his 1990 Barreta GTZ last year, under this law.

PS Just for fun, I would guess the dealer would quote you $1100 for cat for
a 90 CoupeQ, so Bob, what's the actual price.
|This seems real early for converter failure - maybe if you complain long
|enough to the dealer, or perhaps its covered in a tech bulletin. I'd bet
the
|rule of $500 holds for this repair.
