Thanks, Ned, for your advice.  I checked the return line, and it seems to
be working fine;  no clogs that I could see.  The whole situation perplexes
me.  The only thing I can think of is that I have some blockage in the
radiator, but then wouldn't the engine just run hot all the time, instead
of fluctuating?  Plus, this didn't happen gradually, but within about a week
it started to heat up immensely.
