I've seen some real cooling system mysteries when the little return line
that goes to the coolant resevoir is clogged.   Remove it from the resevoir
and run the car (briefly).   This hose should always be squirting.  If it
isn't, there is a blockage and for reasons I'm not entirely clear on the
cooling system will be possesed by demons.  Usually there's a piece of RTV
gasket cement caught in the connection at the top of the radiator.
