Joe....
        Those door handles scoop in water over time & wash away the
necessary lubrication in the handle itself & in the latch assembly.  On top
of that, if the door won't open from the inside, a lot of times the child
safety lock is on (little lever on bottom of the latch that is designed
specially to catch on clothing).  Sacrifice the handle...just cut that
sucker in half with a hacksaw or whatever,  break off the half that
contains the trigger and operate the latch with your finger.  You may need
wd40 if things are relly bad.  Buy another handle & reinstall.
       Voila...the rest of the day is yours.....
