Snow Tires

That time of the year is approaching when we look forward to having fun
with our quattros in the snow! What about some recommendations for a good
snow tire? I have been managing with all-season tires so far but would like
to buy a set of dedicated snow tires for the winter. Looking at the old
posts from last year, I noted that several people on this list bought
snow tires - Bridgestone Blizzaks, Pirelli 190P, etc. What are your
impressions having used them last winter? Although the Blizzaks have good
reviews, I don't like the fact that after 55% of the tread is worn, you're
left with regular all season compound. Are other snow tires still effective
with 45% or less tread on them? Or does the shallow tread depth at that
point become a more dominant factor than the winter rubber compound?

I am considering going with a narrower tire size 195/70R14 vs. the
205/60R15 that my '87 5000TQ came with (same rolling radius). Anyone
done this? Comments?

Thanks in advance,

Zafer
