Reuter's Report on Upcoming A4 (paraphrased)
Thought the quattro netters might be interested in this one.
According to a Reuter's report on 10/27, the new A4 will be available
in Europe on 11/25. It has received rave reviews by European auto
magazines.
A4 is supposed to have much lower cost then the 80 and a range of
engine choices from a turbo diesel to a 5 valve per cylinder engine with
turbo option. Wonder what of these will show up here. Audi's chief
Herbert Demel said that he was convinced that the A4 will be a hit.
The Reutor quoted motor magazine MOT as saying, "It is not hard to
see why the A4 will be a success. Existing customers get a better car
with better looks for the same money or less than the Audi 80.
It will also attract new customers with its sportier looks."
A4 was developed in 26 months. It will have a shape resembling that
of the new A8. Audi plans to make 35,000 in the remainder of this year
and 180,000 next. In Europe prices start at $24,240, the 1.9l turbo
diesel engine-equipped model costs $26,640, which gets 55 miles per
gallon under normal driving.
The Auto Motor und Sport called the car a success because of its
improved handling, suspension, comfort and passenger space. The
car is lighter and thriftier than the 80 even though it'll have
more standard equipment.
"It's a great car and not only because of the money. In comfort terms
it's approaching the Mercedes C-Class and the BMW 3-series," said Auto
Zeitung magazine.
