	I knocked out a cat. on my first Audi several years back.  Here
in Minnesota they check to see if you have the cat. can still in place as
well as test the emitions level.  My brother in law and I cleaned out the can
and welded a pipe through its center (which prevents the ugly "tinny" sound
tathat results from a hollow cat.  The car passed all inspections, and because
it was kept in tume showed no large gain in emissions.  In fact, emissions
were lower than a 5000 turbo with cat.
