Forgive my ambiguous wording, what I meant was that there were no
valve adjustments, as these are now effected by hydraulic means.

BTW, Direct Injection diesels have valves as well, and I just read
about a forthcoming Mercedes system where the fuel is injected 
via solenoid-operated injectors, a la gasoline injectors, but the
pressure of the supply rail has to be about 1,500 bar, or 22,000
psi!  This engine is said to be very efficient, quiet, and economical,
and is envisioned for the A-class of ultra-economy vehicles.

With gas currently at $1.20/gal, I would't count on seeing it here
right away!
