I don't have a solution to your questions, but I find it amusing that I 
put up with a broken odometer for four years because I didn't want to get 
into an expensive repair.  One of the messages after this one said it 
could be fixed for $60!!  My odometer worked intermittently for a couple 
of years and then stopped working completely.
