The odometer of both my Coupe and my Scirocco did pretty much what yours did.
For the Scirocco, I was lucky enough to buy a complete, working instrument
cluster for $20 from a local wrecking yard. A couple of months later, the
odometer in the "new" one was also broken. I had the Audi's
odometer/speedometer rebuilt by a VDO specialist. The cost was $60 since I
pulled it out myself. Would have been about $80 otherwise. The guy that rebuilt
it claimed that this is a very common problem with VDO odometers (since it
happended to me three times in two years, I can hardly argue). He explained
what was wrong, but I can't really recall exactly. He did, however, say to
never poke the odometer button on a VDO while the car is moving.
