Fixed it.  The black connector to the fuel injection system was mislocated - 
the wire clip had been depressed by the (stressed) wiring harness, and the 
connector was partly out.  The bottom pin obviously carries the fuel impulse 
information to the computer.

Anyway - after relocating the wiring harness and connector, I have credible MPG 
and range information.
