I assume the " T " means "turbo"?

Yeah. Now check that the impellor retaining nut is still on the turbo
spindle. Either that, or dismantle the exhaust and fish it out - it won't have
gone far. It won't be recognisable, though.

As a complete "by the by" - I took my ur-quattro into Autohaus Kaufmann in
Hofheim (second exit on the A66 towards Frankfurt from the Wiesbadener
Kreuz) for a duff oil warning switch to be replaced. When they asked for
an address, I gave the local address of some friends. Several weeks later,
they received a letter from Autohaus Kaufmann saying "there is no record of
the timing belt being changed on this vehicle." I was long since back in
England. After two more letters, Autohaus Kaufmann actually sent a new timing
belt (unsolicited) to ny friends' address. They sent it to England, where the
local dealer fitted it during a 10,000 mile service without comment or
charge.
