Also try draining the vacuum pump.  This is the pump mounted to the driver's
side of the engine on my '88 90Q.  Simply removing the pump, turing it end
down and allowing it to drain for a few hours makes loud "clacking" on startup
and at idle while hot go away for a few months.  Permanent fix??  Anyone else
have luck with this technique?
