 Shall I summarise this as "equipment levels vary" ? :-)

 Thanks to all those who responded with comments or extra info. I've stuck
 all the contributions in a file (which makes me feel as though I'm doing
 something productive.) and I'll try to combine them into the main document,
 when I have time.
