RE: Help!, 5000s w/dead batteries

Only problem I've had like this was on the 4000 with a short in the power
mirror switches which I discovered on a very cold morning.

Fellow Quattronians, I need help to help others.

It all started when I started to convince friends and family around
me to by Audi's. Last I counted we have 9 Audi's amongst us.

We've learned some hard lessons especially with 5000's about
hydraulics, luxury electrical gadgets, hydraulic lifters etc, etc...
But once in control, maintenence and repairs done, these cars have
served most of us well. Now I'm faced with 2 cars that have a
problem that has, up to this point, been unrepairable.

The 2 cars, a 1985 5000T, and an 87 5000TQ, both eat batteries.
Both cars have been in and out of the dealer with no results.

The 85 has been back 4 times now! Battery, alternater/regulator, have been
replaced, still no results.

Symptom on the 85: a new battery weakens in about a week, to the
point where the car will not start.

Symptom on the 87: a new battery weakens in about a couple of months
to the point where the car will not start.

I suspect that the root of the problem is different for each car since
the 85 looses it battery so quickly.

What I could use from the group is sharing past experiences with any
problems you have experienced that may sound similar to the case
above. Sticking relays. common electrical shorts, etc..?

I haven't worked on either car myself. The 85 is located in Colorado
Springs, so I'm limited to talking with a repair shop over the phone.

The 87 is local, (San Jose, CA), but I suspect is harder to diagnose
due to the slow, hard to detect drain, on the battery?

I'm determined to fix the 85 some how, as soon as possible.

thanks in advance, all advice is appreciated.

ps, if anyone can recommend a good electrical type that works with
Audi's in the Colorado Springs or maybe even as far as Denver, that
would be appreciated too.
