<I agree with the synthetic lube.  Never used to be able to get first gear
 first thing in the morning.  Now I have a 50/50 chance.

 Mine is second.  I can warm up the engine properly, gently glide out of the
 driveway, acclerate lightly, and the shift to second comes with a grrrind
 almost always.  It only does it when it's cold, <40.  I think I'm going to
 try Redline lube.  I beleive they have it in a 75W80 rather than the 75W80
 I am using now. (Mobil-1)  Redline says the "smooth out" rough shifting too!
