   I assume that you already have the answer to your question, but FYI,
  the drain and fill plugs on my 87 4000S are 17mm.  I would think that they
 are the same on the quattro as well.  I got mine through a Matco dealer who
happened to be at the VW dealership.  It wasn't cheap, but it is needed for a
trans. drain.  To further insert my own $.02, I have run different types of
gear lube in my trans. and found:
                      Castrol is too thick for winter.  Doesn't shift well.
                      Mobil 1 synthetic works excellent.
