<Jacobs coils and power team for Quattro
I checked on a system for my 87 4000S, 1.8L some time ago and came to a few
conclusions:
1. Pretty expensive ~$300 for a little performance gain
2. What do the wires and coil look like, I am skeptical
(factory connectors?? construction?)
If you have been following the thread on wires, a few said that the Jacobs
wires are junk. I don't know. I do know, as cited by Autotech (VW tuner),
that a "hotter" coil can burn out the hall sender in the distributer. I don't
know why, and no one seemed to be able to nail it down, but the tech. guys at
Autotech swaer that it will damage the sender. I figured that a mild upgrade
in electricals (ie. ignition) would provide a little better hp, better running
and so on. the guys at Autotech say that the VW/Audi ignitions system is
excellent as is, and one could expect VERY little gains from "upgrading".
This , of course doesn't apply to points-type ignitions.
So, one can draw two conclusions:
1. Autotech is blowing sunshine you know where because they can't get
more power out of the stock system. (always possible...)
2. They are right, and one should look elsewhere for performance gains
(likely)
Any comments from the others?
