Re: 87 4000S Fan runs...and runs

This might be an old subject, but I've only just gotten back to catching up
on the multitude of mail for the Q digest. If your fan is still running
continuously, here is what I found worked for my car. My 86 4000CS Q
exhibited similar behavior after I had the radiator fixed. The fan would run
very often while driving and then shut off when I turned the ignition off.
Knowing full well that these cars love to scare you to death by turning
their fans on when you are standing next to them, minutes after you've turned
the car off, I knew something was wrong. The shop that replaced the radiator
couldn't figure out what could be wrong, thus concluding that this was normal
behavior. Finally I found a good German car mechanic (Herman's European
Auto in Seattle) who, after studying the schematic, figured out that the
problem was the after-run controller. He replaced the controller. No
problems since (of the fan at least, water pumps (four to five and counting)
and others are another story)...I also became a regular customer while we
were living in Seattle.
