I have been following with interest the speedometer saga because I have a
somewhat similar problem in my 97 5000SQ.  I recall the dealer correcting a
clicking noise by replacing the cluster under warrabty when the car was new
in 1987.  A few years ago--only in the winter--the noise came back.  It
occurs at any speed, a loud clicking noise.  I expect it may once again go
away when the temperature turns warmer.  However, it seems to get louder with
each new winter.   It'll eventually break, I suppose.  Any idea whether
lubricating the cable will work?  Is there a cable, or is this also an
electronic speedometer.  Thanks.
