I installed 4" coax Blaupunkt speakers in the dash of my '84 4000S using a
similar method, but I completely removed the old speakers by cutting away
the plastic welds holding it in using a VERY sharp wood chisel. You have to
be very careful not to crack the housings, as I did on my first try. The
Blaupunkts fit just nicely and I glued them in with silicon glue all around.
Still holding after a year of hard use. (-:
