On the front speakers in my 85 4000sq, I took mine out (you get them from
underneath, I think). I then removed the grills using a favorite tool of
mine -- a hacksaw blade with one end wrapped with duct tape to make a handle.

If you cut so as to leave as much grill intact as possible (basically just
cutting the speaker away), the remaining piece drops back into the dash and
makes a great cover for whatever you fit in to the holes. Mine have been
sitting in there for 4 years now, I had thoughts of adding velcro to keep them
from popping out, but it has not been a problem.

The real problem here is that the space only accomodates a real small speaker,
something like a 3.5 if memory serves me correctly. I have a couple of cheap
Pioneers up there that I believe were intended as drop-ins to a Toyota. I got
a couple of suggestions from this list on better speakers for the location, but
haven't had a chance to try any yet.
