When I lived in Germany (78-86) self-service gas stations were the exception 
rather than the rule.  Especially on the autobahns, where you would cruise to a 
stop and they would leap onto your car, starting the filler and then almost 
running to wash the windshield and lights.

Since they started selling lead-free gas, with its cargo of carcinogens, the 
pumup jockeys have shut themselves away from the forecourts behind glass.
