In the early 70's, Audi sold a car known as the 100LS in North America.
I believe it was much the same as the model 100 in Europe. They had a 
bad reputation, due to the front disk brakes being "inboard".
Instead of by the wheels, the disks were on the tranaxel end of the 
drive shaft. The idea was less unspruge weight.

Although this worked on rear drive cars, like the Jag XKE, the disks got 
too hot in the Audi setup and had very short life. Later 100 models had 
convential brakes, but they couldn't shake the bad rep. When the 100 was 
redone, it was call the 5000 in North America only, to show buyers it was 
different than the "old" 100s.
