On my car the check valve is mounted right next to the pump. If you are
going to install one in your car and you put it close to the nozzles then
the rest of the line would drain, negating the effect of the valve. As I
noted previously, I replaced mine, and my recollection is that the valve
was ~$5 (still expensive IMO).
My cars do not have washers for the headlamps, but I thought the idea
about using larger diameter hose for the windshield lines was a good one
for another reason ... the larger hose would be less restrictive, and
could result in a higher flow rate to the windshield spray nozzles.
