As long as we're just musing....
It's interesting that you mention the similarities between the early 5kt
and the urq.  I have a boner 81 5kt that we've been picking at for a while
and there's a lot of parts that interchange.  But the control arms are the
same as the later 5k (thru 88 I think).

Know what looks like it has a nice front end?  The later 90's. Somewhere
around 90 or 91 they start using a cast control arm and two piece bearing
housing/strut housing (a-la Golf).  I'd almost bet the whole subframe, half
shafts, struts & control arms could be retrofitted to the urq.
