What kind of oil filter?  Occasionally people have gotten a bad
Mann/Bosch filter that blew up.  A new filter solved the problem.
If you're not using a filter with the check valve (Mann, Bosch,
VW/Audi or Beck-Arnley - these are all the same) you should be
using one.  Check the VW archives at ftp.lap.umd.edu for more
details.
