I realize that I am bucking the trend here, but I don't want the A/C to
engage every time I defrost, especially on bitter cold mornings. I had
Oh, I agree wholeheartedly - forcing the A/C on is just as stupid and
assinine a design decision as disallowing it completely. What I am ob-
jecting to is the whole concept that forbids allowing the user to make
an intelligent and informed decision about the current conditions, like
"I am stuck behind a polluting diesel truck so I want *HEAT* and no
fresh air, and since it is cold and damp, I need the A/C to dehumidfy
the heated air".
I want "independent" controls for each independent function. The only
functional decision that I really like in my '83 UrQ is that they conde-
scended to give me independent control of air-to-windshield, air-to-feet,
and indirectly, or rather inconveniently, air-via-left/right/center out-
lets. This provides me with complete control to tailor the flow of air
as I wish. However, they do not allow me to have A/C & heat to dehumidify
cold damp air (fixed on *my* car). They do not allow selection of fresh
(aka "polluted") vs recirc air in that heat is forced to be cold outside
air, while A/C is forced to be only recirc interior air (this is also
fixed on my car). AND IN THE MOST STUPID HEADS-UP-THEIR-ASSES DESIGN
DECSISION EVER MADE, THEY DON'T ALLOW HEATED AIR THROUGH THE CENTER DUCT,
ONLY FRIGID -20F OUTSIDE AIR!
Audi may well make bottom ends that last forever, and be single-handedly
responsible for popularlizing AWD for the masses, and use the world's
nicest car seats (don't they OEM Recaro seats?), but they are fucking
idiots when it comes to packaging together the whole gestalt (rivaling
GM in the heads-wedged-in-the-nether-regions department; hell Audi even
uses GM climate control units -- I rest my case!). At least they seem to
have gotten away from the peculiarly-Teutonic habit of hiding guages down
by your feet . . .

P.S. Sheesh, what set *me* off this morning? Maybe I should go back
to bed for awhile...
