I have a 1986 Audi 5000S, that recently had what seems to be a similar 
problem.  The left front side started making a grinding noise that did 
not get any louder for a while.  After a few months of debate over what 
it was we decided to replace the bearing.  When the bearing was detached 
from the hub it basically disintegrated before our eyes.  Since then the 
grinding noises have ceased and the car has returned to normal.
