The whole vent (vanes, shutter, lever, housing) can be replaced as
a unit (Just pull it out carefully from the dash).  If you have a
pre-85 4000/coupe/quattro, the post-85 4000 vents will fit perfectly,
and looks a lot nicer.  I have done exactly this to my 80 4000.

The vents are actually not outrageously expensive from the dealer
(especially from Linda @ Carlsen Audi), and if you get lucky, you
may find used ones in good condition from salvage yards.
