Radiator leak

     I have an '87 VW Quantum Syncro with the 2.2L 5-cylinder (consider it 
     an '87 4000S Quattro).  I was checking into the reason my low-coolant 
     light was flashing (again), and I discovered that the radiator is 
     leaking at the seam around the top tank.  My question to you all is 
     this:  Can these radiators be repaired when they get a seam leak?  I 
     believe it has an aluminum core with metal tanks, and I don't recall 
     any reason why such a radiator can't be repaired.  Also, is there any 
     reason to avoid a used (hopefully less than mine) or recored radiator 
     if I replace this one?
