This weekend I am going to go look at a 91 V8 with 5sp. I wanted to know
about the inboard disk brakes.

they aren't inboard, the caliper acts from the inner diameter, rather than
outer like on most cars. so the disc looks like a big ring.

>Can they be replaced or should they be
replaced? problems?

i have a '91 200 tq 5speed (btw, there's one in the SF Chronicle for $19000
this week). It has those same infernal-caliper (er, that's inTernal) brakes.
many of the cars experienced warpage in the first few months; audi replaced
the fronts suspensions/brakes with the 100-style components for free. those
days are now GONE. there's a new set of discs available, supposedly made of a
material that won't warp. i was lucky enough to get my first set installed
under warranty. they lasted about 10k miles before...warping! luckily, there
was now coverage under the parts warranty on the discs, so they were again
replaced for free. this was good, because they cost something like $1500 parts
and labor to replace - i woulda sold the damn car if the job hadn't been free.

my advice to you: check whether he's replaced the stock setup with the
100-series setup or the new hardened discs. if he hasn't, walk away.

cheers!
