Climate Control

A few weeks back, I asked this question on the net, got no answer.  
Today, I brought the car to a shop I go regularly.  The answer was 
$$$$.  So let me try again.

It is the climate control on a 1990 90.  Recently it delievers 
nothing but hot air from all vents.  Even at 20F, it gets hot and 
unconfortable after some time.  The fan reacts to temp setting 
correctly.  Namely, when temp setting is higher it does slow down.  
Even setting to AUTO does not help the problem.

I was told that even the look of the control panel is close to those 
on 5000, it is not the same unit.  The control head plus the 
programing unit may need to be replaced.

Is there anyone on the net has experience with this?
