Re: starting problems
I had problems with the cold start injector on the '78 Audi Fox, but
they were always related to what was called the "thermo-time switch."
It seems to me that corrosion on the contacts for the injector itself
would prevent it from *opening* thus causing hard cold starting prob-
lems. I don't have the 5k schematic here, but I did confirm that the
'83 urQ still has such a switch. There is also a relay in parallel
with the switch to allow the computer to richen the mixture on warm
starts if the ignition key is held in the START position for more than
3 seconds.
It sounds like the cold start valve may truly be the source of your
problem, but you may have some other intermittent that has yet to be
identified. I'd recommend checking out the wiring diagram for your
car to see how the valve is hooked up, and verify that all is OK.
BTW - I do have the Bentley for the 5k ... let me know if you need a
copy of the diagram and I can fax a copy to you. I probably wouldn't
be able to get it to you before Monday though.
