I like to minimize the number of times the starter's bendix gear engages
the flywheel, so I usually leave the starter engaged until the engine is
able to sustain operation. On the Fox this is usually less than 1 sec.
On the '88 5k this can be from 1 to 3 secs. On the ur this can be 5 secs
or more if it has been sitting.
Which makes me wonder ...
Has anybody tried to put one of the newer statrers on an older motor? I
don't know how much the gearing is changed, but the starter motor on the
'88 runs considerably faster than the '83.
