brake light on?
This weekend I changed the rotors and pads on the 1988 90 (fwd).
More details in the form of a 'howto' later.
When I was putting the brake fluid reservoir cap back on, it broke,
so I went to the dealer today to get one. I had noticed a little
plunger in the center of the resevoir, within a type of mesh screen.
The old cap had a plunger in the center which I guess presses down
on the sensor. Anyway, my 'brake' light was on which I attributed to
the cap being off (I plugged it with a rag) - not the one in the center,
amber colored multicheck thingie, but one of the red rectangular lights
down near the odometer.
When I got the new cap at the dealer, the part had been superceded
by one without the plunger (or 'peg') in it, just looks like a
regular cap. My light didn't go out, so I asked the service
manager to look at it. He thinks the sensor is bad, which is an
integral part of the reservoir ($44!) or 'any number of things'.
Changing the brakes was so trivial - I *know* I didn't break anything.
There were no pad wires, nothing, that could be causing the light to
stay on. The only things I did were to 1) break the cap, 2) press
down on the plunger in the reservoir a couple of times. Now the
plunger doesn't go down, but I looked at a new reservoir and it doesn't
appear that there is a plunger, just the bottom of the filter.
Hmmm - interesting. I wonder if they changed the whole sensor mechanism
in the reservoir. Aargh.
Any ideas? I can get the light to go out by unplugging the wires at
the bottom of the reservoir, but that's less than ideal. Oh. Some
models have a totally different setup with the wires connecting to
the cap...
