Alan,
	Had the same problem on my '87 5000 TQ. It was a bad master
cylinder - the fluid leaks past the pressure seal in the cylinder
hence no outward leaks. In my case, the pedal would slowly sink if I kept 
it depressed for sometime. Put in a new ATE master cylinder from Halsey
Imports ($45 - Halsey was by far the cheapest, 800-792-0081, ask for Scott)
and no problems since. I've posted the procedure for replacing the master
cylinder previously which Jason Douglas has forwarded to the list today.
