High Idle problems
Mike, I have an 86 5ktq and an 87 5ktqRS2 (320hp) both of which have had the
same problem with fast idle... First off, your idle should increase with the
a/c on... No it shouldn't be 1400rpm... My suggestion is to 1) run the
diagnostic chk to make sure you have a working idle stabalizer valve, then 2)
get mr. screwdriver and set the idle screw (top of t-body) down below spec
(950 +/- ?), the stabilizer valve (if working) will kick in and raise the
rpm's back to spec... This test will tell you if you have the same problem I
did, that is, the idle screw is coated with some type of goop at the factory,
which must have a given life... What the lack of this goop does is lets the
screw back out of the t-body slowly over time... My cure? used a dab of my
kid's silly putty after setting the screw, seems to work fine. If your
vacuum is the problem you should have more symptoms than just a fast idle.
Check the t-connection for the pcv at the top of the valve cover very
closely for cracks... Try pulling the dipstick while the engine's running,
does the engine stall, or stumble and come back? My guess is that the idle
screw is the prob, and the cheapest fix your q will incurr...
