Re: '84 5kS radiator replacement
I've found radiator replacement to be pretty easy ... the toughest thing can
be getting to the screws that hold the shroud onto the radiator. Just did
the '88 about a month ago. On other cars I've left the fan shroud attached
when I pulled the rad, but I found on the '88 that it was easiest to discon-
nect the shroud from the radiator and leave it in the engine compartment.
Two caveats ...
1) If the radiator has plastic tanks ... make sure that you don't overtighten
the hose clamps. I'm pretty sure that this is what someone did on the '88,
the upper hose connection broke at just about the same location as the hose
clamp was. (I've had to replace an aux water pump and a radiator with
broken connections where the hose clamp was)
2) Remember to tighten the hose that goes from the "overflow" tank (to which
the radiator cap is attached) to the left tank before installing the rad.
By the time everything is back together it is awfully tough to get in there
to tighten it.
Good luck!
